Humans Being Made Redundant

I was watching the news today and it mentioned that one of the security companies would be using robots for security checks and with the systems in place, the company has cut down on the number of security guards they employed. One of the spokesperson mentioned that they used drones to help them check on places that might be inaccessible by humans and drones also allowed them to cut down on the time needed to check areas as well as manpower.

This is no longer science fiction that robots would be replacing us in our jobs. Redundancy of humans from use of robots has already become a reality although at a small scale now but huge impact might hit us soon, if what this article said comes true. It is estimated that 7 million jobs in the United States could be lost to robots by 2020, mostly in the administrative or manufacturing sectors. This is not decades away, but in just four years’ time. So those who are working in these areas would need to be proactive and take some time now to rethink how they could upgrade their skills and knowledge so as to move into other jobs that are less likely to be replaced by robots. Some jobs that are less likely to be replaced by robots are social workers, occupational therapist, nutritionist or surgeons as mentioned in another article.

A recent case that caused huge debate on the use of robots is the use of a robot by police in US to kill a man who fatally shot five Dallas police officers by having a robot detonated a bomb at the subject. This caused debates as people are concerned about the future use of “killer robots”. Read more about the article police used of robot to kill here.

Would one day come when robots not only take over our jobs, but have a mind of their own and take over our world, our lives – The Matrix? This is scary.
