What I Know for Sure by Oprah Winfrey

I was at a mall waiting for the library to open when I dropped by Popular Bookstore to browse some books. A powerful emotion struck me when I read the words “What I know for sure?” written by Oprah Winfrey.

My mind raced and they say that the first thought that comes to your mind will be your real thought. What comes to my mind? Death. Yes, to some people, it might seem morbid to talk about death.

But I know for sure that my final destination is death. Everyone is moving towards the final destination of death, no matter what. It seems that if you’re not prepared to die, then you have not truly lived.

With the understanding that death is the final destination, and you couldn’t choose when you want to reach this destination, it gives us a sense of urgency to live in the present. Because you know for sure that you can’t predict the future. So, the only thing to focus on is what you can control – now.

Does it scare you to think that you might die the next moment? Do you feel a sense of regret living the life you are living now if you were told that you only have one more week to live? If this is the case, take courage and start living the life that you are meant to live, right at this moment.

Oprah shared her childhood of being abused, becoming promiscuous and becoming pregnant at the age of 14. Feeling ashamed of her teenage pregnancy, she had kept it a secret and only shared this secret with few of those she trusted. She shared how she had feel betrayed by a family member who reveal the pregnancy to the tabloids, and was devastated thinking that everyone would judge her and criticise her for being a wicked girl who got pregnant at age 14. But no one did. Everyone, strangers and people she knew, treated her no differently after the news broke.

Oprah reminded us that we should feel blessed to be able to grow old, because many don’t get the chance. Each and every morning that you wake up to, it’s another chance for you to live the life that you want.

The powerful words that Oprah read from  “The Seat of the Soul” by Gary Zukav: “Every action, thought, and feeling is motivated by an intention, and that intention is a cause that exists as one with an effect”. If the consequences are not in line with your expectations, it’s likely that you’re expecting one thing but intending another. One powerful takeaway is to ask yourself: “What is my real intention?” when you are doing something.

I’ll encourage everyone to pick up this book “What I Know for Sure” by Oprah Winfrey. Oprah writes from the heart and she shares her insights on topics such as joy, resilience, gratitude, possibility, power and more. Her book will take you on your own journey of reflection and self-discovery and hopefully give you new insights to help you reach your full potential.
